ári / pýpe

On Top and Inside: Ári and Pýpe

Level 2

Ári is “on top of” and stands apart. Pýpe is “inside” and joins the noun.

How It Works

WordMeaningWrittenExample
árion top ofapartyvy ári “on the earth”
pýpeinsidejoinedogapýpe “inside the house”

Pýpe comes from py “foot” plus -pe. It adds the idea of “inside” to the plain -pe (ógape “at home”). With a pronoun it joins too: ndepýpe “inside you”.

Pýpe takes the stress, so the noun before it loses its accent: óga becomes ogapýpe.

Ári follows any noun, also a Spanish one: bicicleta ári “on the bicycle”. Some books put a puso before it after a vowel and join it (kavajuʼári “on a horse”). This course writes ári as a separate word, as the Academy does.

Examples (4)

  1. Aranduka oĩ mesa ári.

The book is on the table.

Ári follows mesa and stands apart.

  2. Ojupi bicicleta ári.

    She gets on the bicycle.

Ári goes after any noun, also a Spanish one.

  3. Aime ogapýpe.

    I am inside the house.

Pýpe joins óga, and the accent of óga is gone.

  4. Oĩ pakova ogapýpe.

There are bananas inside the house.

Oĩ “there is” plus ogapýpe tells where.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting ári before the noun.

    Aranduka oĩ ári mesa.
    Aranduka oĩ mesa ári.

Guarani puts ári after the noun, never before it.
