ნუთუ
Really?
ნუთუ asks with surprise: ნუთუ ხვალ მიდიხარ? (Are you really leaving tomorrow?)
How It Works
ნუთუ (nutu) adds surprise to a question. English uses really or can it be:
- ნუთუ ხვალ მიდიხარ? (Are you really leaving tomorrow?)
- ნუთუ უკვე ათი საათია? (Is it really ten o'clock already?)
The rest of the question does not change. Only ნუთუ is added at the start.
ნუთუ often shows that the news is a little sad or hard to believe: ნუთუ არ გახსოვს ჩემი სახელი? (Do you really not remember my name?) It also works as a short reply: ნუთუ? or ნუთუ მართლა? (Really?)
Compare განა, which argues: განა ძნელია? means It isn't hard, is it? ნუთუ only shows surprise. For a quick, happy really? in everyday talk, many people simply say მართლა?
