How It Works
| Esperanto | English tag |
|---|---|
| Estas bela tago, ĉu ne? | isn't it? |
| Vi parolas Esperanton, ĉu ne? | don't you? |
| La kongreso estis bonega, ĉu ne? | wasn't it? |
The tag works for statements in any tense or person. You use it when you think the answer is yes, but you want to be sure. A short ĉu? at the end works too, after a negative statement as well: La kongreso ne komenciĝis, ĉu?
Zamenhof wrote ĉu ne vere? for the same job. Today the short ĉu ne? is very common. If you have no idea what the answer is, ask a plain question with ĉu at the start: Ĉu estas bela tago?
