estas: There Is / There Are
There Is and There Are
Place, then estas, then the thing.
How It Works
To say that something exists in a place, use estas without any other word for "there".
| Esperanto | Meaning |
|---|---|
| En la ĉambro estas tablo. | There is a table in the room. |
| En la urbo estas du hoteloj. | There are two hotels in the city. |
| Estas kafo. | There is coffee. |
The thing that exists is the subject of estas, so it takes no -n. It takes -j when it is plural. The same estas serves for one and for many: estas tablo, estas tabloj. The subject usually comes after estas in this kind of sentence.
