-on-

-on-: Fractions

Level 5

-on- turns a number into a fraction.

How It Works

NumberWith -on-Meaning
duduonoa half
tritrionoa third
kvarkvaronoa quarter
dekdekonoa tenth

A triono is not a part of three. It is one of three equal parts of something else, and you name that whole with de: triono de la kuko. A fraction is a noun, so it takes the usual endings: du trionoj is two thirds.

In front of another word, the short form duon- is used: duonhoro means half an hour. The ending also works as -ona and -one for adjectives and adverbs.
