میخواهم که تو بیایی
Wanting Someone Else to Do Something
The verb after که takes the ending of the new person, so it says بیایی for تو and بیایم for من.
How It Works
| Who acts | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| the same person | میخواهم + subjunctive | میخواهم بروم. (I want to go.) |
| another person | میخواهم که + subject + subjunctive | میخواهم که تو بروی. (I want you to go.) |
The word که links the two parts. The person who acts comes next, and the verb takes that person's ending: مادرم میخواهد که من داکتر شوم. (My mother wants me to become a doctor.)
Other tenses of خواستن work the same way. The verb after که stays in the present subjunctive: خواهرم میخواست که برایش یک کتاب بخرم. (My sister wanted me to buy her a book.)
To ask someone to do something, use خواستن with از: از او خواستم که بیاید. (I asked him to come.) The person who is asked takes از, and the verb after که is the subjunctive.
Put the negative on the first verb to say you do not want it: نمیخواهم که دیر کنی (I don't want you to be late). Put it on the second verb to say you want the person not to do it: میخواهم که دیر نکنی (I want you not to be late).

Common Mistakes
Using the present tense with می after که.
میخواهم که تو میآیی.میخواهم که تو بیایی.After که, the verb is the subjunctive, not the present tense with می. For a simple verb like آمدن, that is بیایی.
Giving the second verb the wrong person ending.
میخواهم که تو بیایم.میخواهم که تو بیایی.The second verb agrees with the person who acts, تو, so it ends in ـی.
