این و آن
This and That
این and آن never change for a man, a woman, or a thing.
How It Works
| Near | Far |
|---|---|
| این کتاب (this book) | آن کتاب (that book) |
| این دکان (this shop) | آن دکان (that shop) |
| این چه است؟ (what is this?) | آن چه است؟ (what is that?) |
این and آن can stand alone, as in this one and that one: این خوب است. They can also come before a noun, as in این چای (this tea).
Point with your hand too: این is for something close, like the cup you are holding, and آن is for something farther away, like a shop across the street.
Dari writes آن with آ. Iranian speech spells it اون, and Dari writing does not use that spelling.
Examples (5)

- این چه است؟

- آن مرد معلم است.

آن comes before the noun مرد.
- این شاگرد خوب است.

این comes before the noun شاگرد.
