Here and There

They are place words, so they go where the place goes, before the form of be.

How It Works

اینجا (here)آنجا (there)
من اینجا استم.او آنجا است.
I am here.He or she is there.

اینجا comes from این (this) and آنجا comes from آن (that). Put the place word before the form of be, which comes last in a simple sentence.

Ask with کجا and answer with a place word: کتاب من کجا است؟ اینجا است. Write each as one word, اینجا and آنجا, with no space.

Add از for from and تا for up to: از اینجا (from here), تا آنجا (up to there).

  1. من اینجا استم.

    I am here.

    اینجا comes before the form of be.

  2. دکان آنجا است.

    The shop is there.

    آنجا names the place of the shop.

  3. کتاب شما اینجا است.

    Your book is here.

    اینجا tells where your book is.

  4. مکتب ما آنجا است.

    Our school is there.

    آنجا points to a place away from you.

  5. آب اینجا نیست، آنجا است.

    The water is not here, it is there.

    اینجا and آنجا appear together.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing the Iranian speech form for there.

    دکان اونجا است.
    دکان آنجا است.

    اونجا is an Iranian speech spelling. Dari writes آنجا.
