Object Endings on Verbs

Level 3

The ending replaces the object, so you do not also write را.

How It Works

These are the same endings you know from کتابم and کتابش. On a verb they name the object: دیدمش means I saw him, I saw her or I saw it. Put the ending after the whole verb, person ending included.

EndingMeaningExample
ـشhim, her, itدیدمش
ـتyou (a friend)دیدمت
ـشانthemدیدمشان
ـتانyou (polite or plural)دیدمتان

The ending already is the object, so do not add را. Choose ـت or ـتان the same way you choose تو or شما. A compound verb takes the ending too: تیلفون کردمت. (I called you.)

A command takes the ending as well: بگیرش (take it), بخوانش (read it).

Examples (5)

  1. مریم را می‌شناسی؟ بلی، می‌شناسمش.

Do you know Maryam? Yes, I know her.

    می‌شناسمش: ـش stands for Maryam.

  2. این کتاب خوب است؛ دیروز خواندمش.

This book is good; I read it yesterday.

خواندمش: ـش stands for the book.

  3. فردا می‌بینمت.

    I'll see you tomorrow.

می‌بینمت: ـت is you, said to a friend.

  4. دوستانم آمدند؛ کنار دروازه دیدمشان.

My friends came; I saw them at the gate.

دیدمشان: ـشان stands for the friends.

  5. تیلفون کردمت، جواب ندادی.

I called you, but you didn't answer.

A compound verb takes the ending: تیلفون کردمت.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing the ending as a separate word.

    دیروز دیدم ش.
    دیروز دیدمش.

The ending joins the verb with no space and no half-space.

  • Using ـت for someone you call شما.

    استاد صاحب، دیروز دیدمت.
    استاد صاحب، دیروز دیدمتان.

Use ـتان for a teacher or an older person, the same way you use شما.
