ـمان، ـتان، ـشان
Our, Your and Their Endings
Use ـتان for a person you call شما, as well as for more than one person.
How It Works
The endings for we, you and they are longer. They all end in ان.
| Ending | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ـمان | our | موترمان |
| ـتان | your (شما) | پدرتان |
| ـشان | their | خانهشان |
Say them kitābamān, kitābatān and kitābashān. One owner takes ـم, ـت or ـش. More than one owner takes the longer ending. One person you call شما also takes ـتان.
After a silent ه, write a half-space: خانهمان, خانهتان, خانهشان. These endings take no extra ا, which sets them apart from خانهام.
After ها add ی: کتابهایمان (our books).
Family words work the same way: مادرمان (our mother), برادرتان (your brother), خواهرشان (their sister).
A word that ends in م takes a half-space before ـمان, so the two م letters stay apart: معلممان (our teacher).
Use ـتان for a guest or an elder, and ـت for a friend.
