There Is and There Isn't
Answer a question with the same word: شیر هست؟ بلی، هست.
How It Works

| در یخچال شیر هست. | Is there milk? | There is milk in the fridge. |
| در یخچال شیر نیست. | Is there milk? | There is no milk in the fridge. |
To say where a known thing is, use است, or نیست when it is not there: شیر در یخچال نیست. To say whether something exists at all, use هست or نیست.
In a short answer, say the word alone: بلی، هست. نه، نیست.
When هست and نیست mean there is, they take no person ending. To say I am or you are, use استم or استی.

The answer repeats هست.
- در شهر ما بازار هست.
There is a market in our town.
The place در شهر ما comes first, then the thing, then هست.
Common Mistakes
Adding نه before هست.
در خانه نان نه هست.در خانه نان نیست.Dari says there is not with نیست. Leave out نه.
