Having Something with داشتن

Level 2

For not having, write ندارم، نداری، ندارد and so on: وقت ندارم (I have no time).

How It Works

The present of داشتن has no می‌. The negative adds ن in front.

PersonHaveDo not have

The thing you have comes first, so the verb stays last: برادر دارم (I have a brother), موتر دارم (I have a car), وقت دارم (I have time).

A question keeps the same form with ؟ The short answer repeats the verb: بلی، دارم.

To say that something is in a place, use هست: در کوچه یک دکان هست (there is a shop in the street).

The past is داشتم، داشتی، داشت (I had, you had, he or she had).

Examples (5)

I have three uncles on my father's side and two on my mother's.

دارم follows the things you have.

    Maryam has a new car.

    The ending ـد shows او.

    Do you have time today?

وقت دارید asks about free time.

We do not have a big house.

نداریم is the negative of داریم.

    Do you have a pen?

The ending ـی shows تو, and a ؟ turns it into a question.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting دارم before the thing you have.

In a plain statement, the thing you have comes before the verb. Say it first, then دارم.
