Before a whole clause, the phrase grows to با وجود اینکه.

How It Works

با وجود is a formal phrase of news and books. It sounds like ba wujūd-i: the ezafe is there when you say it and absent when you write it.

The main clause stays an ordinary sentence. The two parts go against each other, so no second link such as اما is needed.

با وجود never gives a reason. For because of, say به خاطر or به سبب (see Giving Reasons).

The phrase با این وجود means the same as با این حال: it opens a new sentence and refers to the one before.

Where to meet it: news, editorials and school essays. A short phrase like با وجود باران packs a whole contrast into three words, so writers like it. Speech says با اینکه (see Although): با اینکه باران می‌بارید، رفتیم.

  1. با وجود سردی هوا، کودکان تا شام در باغ بازی کردند.

    In spite of the cold weather, the children played in the garden until evening.

    با وجود is followed by the noun سردی.

  2. با وجود کار زیاد، او هر هفته به دیدن پدرکلانش می‌رود.

    In spite of a lot of work, he visits his grandfather every week.

    A noun phrase, کار زیاد, names what could have stopped him.

  3. با وجود اینکه راه طولانی بود، مهمانان به موقع رسیدند.

    Although the road was long, the guests arrived on time.

    Before a verb clause, the phrase grows to با وجود اینکه.

  4. با وجود کمبود وقت، شاگردان پروژهٔ خود را تمام کردند.

    In spite of the lack of time, the students finished their project.

    کمبود وقت is the obstacle, and تمام کردند is what happened anyway.

  5. با وجود اینکه چندین بار به این باغ رفته بودم، هر بار چیز تازه‌ای در آن می‌دیدم.

    Although I had gone to this garden many times, each time I saw something new in it.

    The clause after اینکه uses the past perfect, and the main clause uses the habitual past.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting a verb clause after با وجود without اینکه.

    با وجود باران می‌بارید، رفتیم.
    با وجود اینکه باران می‌بارید، رفتیم.

    Before a verb clause, use با وجود اینکه. Before a noun, say با وجود باران.
