جان و صاحب

Adding جان and صاحب

Level 1

جان also follows family words, as in مادر جان and برادر جان.

How It Works

WordGoes afterExampleMeaning
جانa nameاحمد جان، مریم جانdear Ahmad, dear Maryam
جانa family wordمادر جان، برادر جانdear mother, dear brother
صاحبa job titleداکتر صاحب، معلم صاحب، استاد صاحبdoctor, teacher, professor (said with respect to a man)
صاحبهa job titleداکتر صاحبه، معلم صاحبهdoctor, teacher (said with respect to a woman)

جان literally means life or soul, and it is a warm way to say dear. Use it for people close to you, such as friends and family. Use صاحب for a man you respect, such as a doctor or a teacher, and صاحبه for a woman.

Both words come after, never before. You can also call a person by the title alone: داکتر، معلم.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting جان before the name.

    جان احمد، تو کجا استی؟
    احمد جان، تو کجا استی؟

جان goes after the name, not before it. صاحب goes after the title in the same way.
