Common Masculine Nouns

Level 1

Many masculine nouns end in a consonant in their dictionary form. Use masculine agreement with words such as grad, stol and prijatelj.

How It Works

A dictionary normally lists a noun in the nominative singular. Many masculine nouns in that form end with a consonant: grad, stol, prijatelj. Use masculine singular words such as ovaj and velik with them.

Words for people and words for objects can both be masculine. Later, animacy matters for a masculine direct object: an animate noun can take a different accusative form from an inanimate noun. That is a separate distinction from gender itself.

Do not apply the final-consonant clue blindly. Learn a common exception with its agreeing form, such as ova noć. A changed case ending also does not mean that a noun has changed gender.

Examples (3)

  1. Stol je velik.

    The table is large.

    Velik agrees with masculine stol.

  2. Grad je lijep.

    The city is beautiful.

    Lijep is masculine singular.

  3. Moj prijatelj radi.

    My friend is working.

    Moj agrees with masculine prijatelj.
