Common Feminine Nouns
Common feminine nouns include kuća, knjiga and žena. They often end in -a in the nominative singular.
How It Works
With kuća, knjiga and žena, choose feminine singular agreement: ova, moja, velika or nova as appropriate. These familiar -a nouns provide a useful starting pattern.
The ending changes when the noun has another role. For example, knjiga becomes knjigu as a direct object. It remains feminine; both the noun and its modifier adjust to the new case.
Separate gender from the noun’s shape. Tata and kolega can refer to male people and take masculine agreement despite their final -a. Learn such nouns with an actual phrase rather than predicting gender from one letter alone.
