Background and Main Events

Level 5

In past narration, imperfective verbs often supply ongoing background, while perfective verbs present bounded events that move the account forward.

How It Works

Dok sam kuhala, zazvonio je telefon. places the ringing within an ongoing cooking scene. The perfective zazvonio presents a bounded onset; the imperfective kuhala leaves the cooking endpoint outside the focus.

A sequence such as ušla je, skinula kaput i sjela presents successive bounded events. An imperfective verb can instead describe repetition or an activity viewed internally, including when it is the main topic of the story.

Past time does not itself select perfective aspect. A completed period can contain an imperfective activity: Cijelo sam jutro čitala. This says how the morning was spent without necessarily asserting completion of a particular book.

While we were having dinner, someone rang the bell.

  2. Petra je otvorila prozor i sjela za stol.

Petra opened the window and sat down at the table.

  3. Cijelo sam jutro čitao, a zatim sam otišao u šetnju.

I read all morning and then went for a walk.
