tot + Gerund
Tot with Gerunds: Time and Concession
Tot plus a gerund can introduce a concession, but it can also describe simultaneity.
How It Works
Tot i sabent el risc, va continuar makes the concessive meaning explicit: the person continued despite knowing the risk. Tot sabent can also receive a concessive reading in context. The gerund normally shares its understood subject with the main action in these examples.
Do not assume that tot automatically means although before every gerund. Tot caminant, parlàvem simply describes two simultaneous activities. Meaning and context distinguish the concessive and temporal readings.
A gerund should not be used to disguise an unrelated action that happens later than the main event. For a later result, write a coordinated or finite subordinate clause so the event order remains clear.
