perquè + Subjunctive
Subjunctive in Purpose Clauses
Purpose perquè introduces an intended result with subjunctive.
How It Works
T'ho dic perquè ho sàpigues means I am telling you so that you know. The subordinate clause states the intended result of the main action, not a factual cause explaining it. That purpose meaning normally selects subjunctive.
Causal perquè instead commonly takes indicative: ho sé perquè ho he llegit. English can translate the two uses differently even though Catalan spells the connector identically. Ask whether the clause answers why the fact is true or what the actor hopes to achieve.
A finite purpose clause is useful when its subject differs from the main subject. Per tal que provides an explicit purpose connector; with the same actor, an appropriate infinitival purpose phrase may be shorter.
