per què

Why with Per Què

Level 1

Write per què as two words when asking why.

How It Works

Per què vens? asks for a reason. Keep the space and the accent in a direct question, and also in an indirect question such as no sé per què ve. A question mark belongs to the whole question, not automatically to every phrase containing per què.

A reason in the answer commonly begins with perquè, one word: vinc perquè m'has convidat. The noun el perquè means the reason or explanation and can take an article. These three spellings represent different grammatical uses.

Per què can also literally mean for what in a suitable construction, but why is the ordinary question use at this level. Do not choose the spelling solely by the presence of a question mark; decide whether you are asking for a reason or supplying one.
