ser + Identity/Classification

Ser for Identity and Classification

Level 3

Ser identifies, classifies and describes a person or thing.

How It Works

Use ser when saying who someone is or what something is: és la Júlia, és una escola. A profession or role used simply as a category often has no article: és professora, som estudiants.

Classification can involve a noun, adjective or material phrase: és professora, és important, és de fusta. A profession used simply as a category normally lacks an indefinite article, but an expanded description can take one: és una professora molt pacient.

Do not reduce ser to permanent qualities. An assessment such as aquesta pregunta és difícil may concern only the current task. Estar can present a different kind of condition, but many adjectives have their own distribution rather than a free permanent/temporary choice. In all cases, keep plural and gender agreement on the descriptive element when it has variable forms.

Examples (3)

  1. És una professora molt pacient.

She is a very patient teacher.

  2. Aquestes preguntes són importants.

    These questions are important.

  3. La cadira és de fusta.

The chair is made of wood.
