Present Subjunctive after Wishes and Requests

Level 4

Wishes and requests for another person’s action commonly use que plus subjunctive.

How It Works

Vull que vinguis names the desired action and identifies its actor through the subordinate verb. The wish does not assert that the person actually comes. Demano que ho reviseu similarly reports a request, not a completed review.

When the person wanting and the person acting are the same, an infinitive is often the natural pattern: vull venir. A finite que clause is useful when the actors differ or the structure needs an explicit subject.

In a present frame use present subjunctive for a current or future desired action. Volia que vinguessis places the wish in the past and commonly takes imperfect subjunctive. Keep the requested action distinct from any factual claim about what has happened.
