Present Subjunctive after Evaluation

Level 4

Evaluations with que commonly select subjunctive, even when the event is known to be true.

How It Works

És important que vinguis evaluates an action rather than simply asserting that it happens. Em sorprèn que ho sàpigues can describe knowledge that is entirely real; the subjunctive does not mean the speaker doubts every evaluated fact.

Use an infinitive when evaluating an action without specifying a separate subject: és important escoltar. A finite que clause lets you identify a particular actor through its verb ending or subject.

Present subjunctive fits a current or prospective situation. Perfect subjunctive presents prior completion: em sorprèn que hagis acabat. In a past frame, imperfect or pluperfect forms may be needed. The evaluation supplies mood, while the time relationship supplies tense.
