Preposition + qui/què
Preposition Plus Qui or Què in Relatives
After a required preposition, use qui for people and què for things in these relative patterns.
How It Works
L'amic amb qui treballo retains amb from treballar amb algú. El tema de què parlem retains de from parlar de. The preposition is part of the relationship inside the relative clause, not an optional ornament.
Relative què after a preposition has an accent; plain relative que as subject or direct object does not. Qui and què here do not change for gender or number. The compound relative el qual can provide another option with explicit agreement: el tema del qual parlem.
Do not omit the preposition because English can leave it at the end or suppress it in casual speech. Identify the underlying Catalan phrase first: parlar del tema leads to de què. For location, on can sometimes express the place relationship directly without an added en.
