pas
Northern Pas and General Negative Reinforcement
Pas reinforces or qualifies negation in several varieties; Northern usage can also use it as the main negative marker.
How It Works
No ho sé pas can contradict an expectation that the speaker knows. Pas is not absent from Central Catalan: it occurs there with discourse-sensitive force, so it must not be labeled an exclusively Northern word.
For a genuine Northern comparison, distinguish the local omission of preverbal no from the no ... pas pattern also found outside Northern Catalan. A sentence such as vindrà pas, labeled Northern, can be an ordinary negative prediction in that variety. By contrast, no vindrà pas in a general context often contradicts an expectation. Do not translate the regional simple negative with extra certainty unless the context actually supplies that force.
