Tanmateix adds contrast; així mateix adds another point in the same direction.

How It Works

Tanmateix means nevertheless or however and signals a conclusion that resists an expectation. Així mateix means likewise or furthermore and adds parallel information. Similar formality does not make these connectors interchangeable.

At the beginning of a sentence or independent clause, a comma after the connector usually helps the reader see its discourse role. Use a full stop or semicolon when connecting substantial independent clauses rather than joining everything with commas.

Distinguish així mateix from a literal reference to doing something in just that way. In an argument, decide whether the new sentence supports the preceding point or qualifies it. If there is no clear logical relation, adding a formal connector will not create one.
