After a preposition, el qual agrees with its antecedent and can clarify a complex relative clause.

How It Works

Choose el qual, la qual, els quals or les quals from the antecedent's gender and number. The preceding preposition comes from the relation inside the relative clause: contra la proposta becomes la proposta contra la qual es va recórrer.

In formal review, use the agreeing relative to clarify the antecedent where several nouns compete. La resolució contra la qual recorrem preserves both the feminine singular reference and the governing contra. El qual is not a universal replacement for every restrictive que without a preposition. Its clearest applications include prepositional and explanatory relatives, where its extra morphology helps the reader track reference.
