Com and Com a

Level 5

Com a commonly marks a role or capacity; com commonly introduces a comparison.

How It Works

Treballa com a metgessa says that being a doctor is her role. Treballa com una metgessa compares how someone works with a doctor's manner or behavior. The difference is semantic, not simply a choice between a long and short connector.

Before certain determiners, the a of a role expression is absent in the general formal pattern: com el representant del grup. Therefore an article after com does not by itself prove a comparison. Context still determines whether the person occupies a role or merely resembles someone.

For clear teaching examples, use an undetermined profession after com a and a comparison phrase after com. Do not insert a before every adjective or before a full comparative clause.
