Basic Adjective Position

Level 1

A descriptive adjective normally follows its noun in neutral Catalan.

How It Works

For an ordinary description, begin with the noun and add the adjective: una camisa blava. Two coordinated descriptions often use i: una taula rodona i petita. This does not mean every sequence of two adjectives requires i; a classifying adjective and a descriptive modifier can have different scopes.

Position can change interpretation. Un gran home is a great man; un home gran can be an old or large man. Una pobra dona invites sympathy; una dona pobra lacks money. Una certa notícia is an unspecified piece of news; una notícia certa is true news. El mateix dia means the same day, while el dia mateix emphasizes that very day.

Before a masculine singular noun, bo commonly has bon: un bon amic. Color and classifying adjectives normally follow the noun in neutral descriptions. A marked or poetic order should not be taught as the everyday default, but unusual placement alone does not make every sentence ungrammatical.

  2. És un bon amic.
