Canonical Weak-Pronoun Order

Level 5

Pronoun clusters follow grammatical order rather than the order of the full noun phrases they replace.

How It Works

Reflexive se precedes ordinary personal object clitics, and first- or second-person clitics normally precede third-person objects: se me'n va, te'l dono. En and hi occupy later positions in combinations such as me'n and m'hi.

With a longer group, identify the reflexive, recipient, object and adverbial functions separately before writing it. Se me'n va contains reflexive se, first-person me and en. A pair such as te l'hi portaré can contain a recipient te, a definite object l’ and locative hi. This last hi is not the singular-dative replacement in l'hi dono; the same spelling can represent different analyses.

Examples (3)

  1. Se me'n va anar el temps.

    Time slipped away from me.

  2. Te l'hi portaré demà.

I will bring it to you there tomorrow.

  3. No se n'ha adonat.

    She has not realized it.
