tan...com / tant...com
As Much or as as
Use tan ... com with qualities, and tant ... com with quantities or actions.
How It Works
Tan modifies an adjective or adverb: tan alt com, tan bé com. It does not agree, though the adjective still does. Tant modifies a noun or the amount of an action: tant temps com, treballa tant com jo.
Before a noun, tant agrees: tanta aigua, tants llibres, tantes persones. After a verb without a noun, use invariable tant: dorm tant com tu. This distinction prevents forms such as tan llibres or tanta bé.
Com introduces the second side of an equality comparison. Més and menys use que instead when comparing unequal degrees. A phrase such as tan aviat com puguis compares the time or manner to a whole clause; the basic tan-plus-adverb structure remains intact.
