Agreement of aquest and aquell
Demonstratives agree with the noun they identify: aquest, aquesta, aquests, aquestes.
How It Works
Aquest and its related forms identify something near the speaker or current topic. Aquell, aquella, aquells and aquelles commonly identify something farther away. The noun determines gender and number: aquesta casa, aquells carrers.
Catalan varieties organize distance differently. Valencian commonly uses este, eixe and aquell with three degrees; other varieties commonly use a two-way aquest/aquell distinction. Treat these as regional systems rather than mixing forms without attention to context.
A demonstrative normally occupies the determiner position without a preceding definite article: aquest llibre. It can also stand without repeating an understood noun: prefereixo aquesta. Do not add an accent to the demonstrative simply because the noun is omitted; its spelling remains the same.
