Casual Pronouns Among Friends

Level 2

Sentences with ငါ, နင် or မင်း usually drop ပါ.

How It Works

Burmese has polite words for "I" and "you" and casual ones. The casual ones belong to close relationships: friends of the same age, brothers and sisters close in age, and parents talking to their children.

CasualPolite
youမင်း (mostly men), နင် (mostly women)ခင်ဗျား / ရှင်

Casual sentences usually leave out (Come over to my place.)

Never use မင်း or နင် with an older person, a stranger or a monk. It sounds rude. With an older person, use a family word in place of "you": When you are not sure, stay polite.

ငါ is the same for men and women, so the word ငါ does not show the speaker's gender.

Common Mistakes

  • Saying မင်း to an older man.

With an older man, call him ဦးလေး in place of "you". မင်း sounds rude to him.

  • Leaving out the tone change for "my".

Before a noun it owns, ငါ becomes ငါ့.
