ပေါ် / အောက် / ထဲ

On, Under and Inside

Level 1

Burmese also says ပေါ် for riding in a car or bus: ဘတ်စ်ကားပေါ်မှာ means "on the bus".

How It Works

These words work like "on", "under" and "in" in English, but they come after the noun.

WordMeaningExample
ပေါ်on, on top ofစားပွဲပေါ်မှာ
အောက်underကုတင်အောက်မှာ
ထဲin, insideအိတ်ထဲမှာ
ရှေ့in front ofအိမ်ရှေ့မှာ
နောက်behindအိမ်နောက်မှာ
ဘေးbesideဘဏ်ဘေးမှာ

Add မှာ for where something is, ကို for where it goes, and က for where it comes from: အိတ်ထဲက (out of the bag).

Cars, buses and trains take ပေါ်: ကားပေါ်တက်တယ် (get in the car), ကားပေါ်က ဆင်းတယ် (get out of the car).

To ask where something is, use ဘယ်မှာလဲ: သော့ ဘယ်မှာလဲ။ (Where are the keys?) The answer names the thing, then its place: အိတ်ထဲမှာ (in the bag).

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the place word before the noun, in English order.

    ပေါ်စားပွဲမှာ
    စားပွဲပေါ်မှာ

The noun comes first, then ပေါ်, then မှာ.
