မ…နဲ့
Asking Someone Not to
Between friends, drop ပါ: မသွားနဲ့။ (Don't go.)
How It Works
To ask someone not to do something, the verb sits inside a frame. You will hear this frame at pagodas, in shops and at home.
| Request | Burmese |
|---|---|
| Please go. | သွားပါ။ |
| Please don't go. | မသွားပါနဲ့။ |
| Don't go. (to a friend) | မသွားနဲ့။ |
Keep နဲ့ and ဘူး apart. မသွားပါဘူး။ means I won't go, a statement about yourself. မသွားပါနဲ့။ asks the listener not to go.
This နဲ့ has a different job from the နဲ့ that means with or and. The spelling is the same, and the position tells them apart: this one closes the sentence.
