ပြန်

Again and Back

Level 2

On its own, ပြန် is a verb meaning "go back", and with no place named it means going home: ပြန်တော့မယ်။ (I'm heading home now.)

How It Works

ပြန် has two uses.

As a verb, it means "return". Without a place, it means going home: ပြန်တော့မယ်။ (I'm heading home now.) With a place: ဘယ်တော့ ရန်ကုန် ပြန်မလဲ။ (When are you going back to Yangon?)

Before another verb, it adds "back" or "again". It sits right before that verb, after any object.

PhraseMeaning

ပြန်ပေးgive back
ပြန်ပြောsay again, reply
ဖုန်းပြန်ဆက်call back
ပြန်စstart again

When you don't catch something, ask: ပြန်ပြောပါဦး။ (Please say that again.)

When you leave work or a friend's house, going home is always ပြန်. The verb လာ (come) is for someone moving toward where the listener is.

ပြန် also gives a warm goodbye: ပြန်တွေ့မယ်နော်။ (See you again, OK?)

Examples (5)

ပြန် before လာ means "come back".

  2. ကျွန်မ ဖုန်းပြန်ဆက်ပါမယ်။

    I'll call you back.

ပြန် sits after the object ဖုန်း and right before ဆက်.

I don't understand. Please say it again.

Common Mistakes

  • Using လာ for going home when you are at work.

    ကျွန်မ ငါးနာရီ အိမ်လာမယ်။
    ကျွန်မ ငါးနာရီ အိမ်ပြန်မယ်။

Going home from anywhere else is ပြန်. အိမ်လာမယ် means "I'll come to the house", said to someone who is there.
