Topic and Focus Word Order
Мария купи книгата. answers What did Maria buy? Книгата я купи Мария. answers Who bought the book? The new part goes at the end.
How It Works
1. Given first, new last. The basic neutral order is subject, verb, object. You change it to put the known part first and the new part at the end, where the sentence stress naturally falls:
- Брат ми дойде вчера. (My brother came yesterday.) The question was When?
- Вчера дойде брат ми. (Yesterday my brother came.) The question was Who came? or What happened?
2. Fronting the object. To make a definite object the topic, move it to the front and repeat it with a short pronoun (object doubling): Книгата я купи Мария. (It was Maria who bought the book.) In speech this pronoun is practically required; leaving it out sounds bookish and can make the roles unclear. Иван го поздрави Мария means that Maria greeted Ivan, while Иван поздрави Мария means that Ivan greeted Maria.
3. New subjects after the verb. A subject that is new to the listener often comes after the verb: В стаята влезе едно момиче. (A girl came into the room.) Звъни телефонът. (The phone is ringing.) This is also covered in subject after the verb.
4. Introducing something new. To say that something new is somewhere, start with the place and use има: На масата има ваза. (There is a vase on the table.) Once the vase is known, it becomes the topic: Вазата е на масата. (The vase is on the table.)
5. Stress can do the same job. In speech a strongly stressed word can be the focus even early in the sentence: МАРИЯ купи книгата. Questions can mark focus with ли, and full pronouns add contrast, as in мене ме.
Examples (6)
- Мария купи книгата.
Maria bought the book.
Answers "What did Maria buy?" The new part, книгата, comes last.
- Книгата я купи Мария.
It was Maria who bought the book.
Answers "Who bought the book?" The known book comes first and is repeated by я.
- Брат ми дойде вчера.
My brother came yesterday.
The time is the new information.
- Вчера дойде брат ми.
Yesterday my brother came.
The person is the new information, so the subject follows the verb.
- На масата има ваза.
There is a vase on the table.
The vase is new, so it comes at the end after има.
- Вазата е на масата.
The vase is on the table.
The vase is already known, so it is the topic at the start.
Common Mistakes
Fronting an object without the repeating short pronoun when you mean the object is the topic.
Иван поздрави Мария.Иван го поздрави Мария.The intended meaning is "It was Maria who greeted Ivan." Without го, listeners read Иван as the subject, so the sentence says that Ivan greeted Maria.
Starting with a new, indefinite thing to say that it is somewhere.
Ваза е на масата.На масата има ваза.Something new is introduced with the place first and има. The order Вазата е на масата is for a vase the listener already knows.
