Subject After the Verb
New information goes last, so a new subject can follow the verb: Започна заседанието. (The session began.)
How It Works
1. The basic idea. In neutral word order the subject comes first: Директорът влезе в залата (The director came into the hall). This answers What did the director do? If the question is Who came in? or What happened?, the subject is the new information, so it goes last: В залата влезе директорът.
2. Typical patterns.
- Something starts, ends, appears or arrives: Започна заседанието (The session began), Настъпи тишина (Silence fell), Дойде пролетта (Spring came).
- A place or time word comes first and sets the scene: Вчера в града пристигнаха туристи от Япония (Yesterday tourists from Japan arrived in the town).
- Things happening now: Звъни телефонът (The phone is ringing).
3. A new person or thing. A participant who has not been mentioned yet often comes after the verb, sometimes with един: На вратата се появи един непознат (A stranger appeared at the door).
4. Agreement does not change. The verb still agrees with the subject, even though the subject comes later: В залата влезе ученикът but В залата влязоха учениците.
5. Short forms still cannot start the sentence. If the verb has a short pronoun or се, the sentence begins with the verb or another word, never with the short form: Обади ми се шефът (My boss called me). See the placement of short pronouns.
6. Where you meet it. This order is common in stories, news and formal reports, and it is natural in speech too. For how the end of the sentence marks focus, see topic and focus word order.

Common Mistakes
Leaving the verb singular because the plural subject comes after it.
В залата влезе учениците.В залата влязоха учениците.The verb agrees with the subject wherever the subject stands. Учениците is plural, so the verb must be влязоха.
Starting the sentence with a short pronoun when the verb comes first.
Му се обади шефът.Обади му се шефът.Short forms such as му and се can never open a sentence. Put the verb first and the short forms right after it.
