Neutral Word Order
A normal sentence goes subject → verb → object: Мария чете книга. (Maria is reading a book.)
How It Works
In a plain statement, Bulgarian uses the same order as English: subject – verb – object.
- Мария чете книга. (Maria is reading a book.)
- Иван пие кафе. (Ivan drinks coffee.)
Why order matters. Nouns have no case endings, so Мария вижда Иван (Maria sees Ivan) and Иван вижда Мария (Ivan sees Maria) look the same apart from the order. In a neutral sentence, the first noun is the one doing the action.
Other parts. Adjectives come before the noun: нова книга (a new book). Time and place words often stand at the start or the end: Утре отивам на море. or Отивам на море утре. A question word usually comes first: Какво чете Мария? (What is Maria reading?) The subject pronoun is often left out: Чета книга. See leaving out subject pronouns.
Flexible order. Speakers can move words to change the focus. When the object is placed first, a short pronoun is often added to show that it is the object: Иван го вижда Мария. means that Maria sees Ivan. You will learn this in doubling the object and topic and focus word order. As a beginner, use the neutral order.

Common Mistakes
Putting the object first without a short pronoun to say Maria sees Ivan.
Иван вижда Мария.Мария вижда Иван.With no pronoun to mark the object, the first noun is understood as the subject, so the incorrect sentence means Ivan sees Maria. Put the subject first. To put Иван first and keep him as the object, add го: Иван го вижда Мария.
