Doubling the Object
When a known object comes first, repeat it with a short pronoun: Книгата я прочетох (I read the book). A nonspecific new object in a neutral sentence is normally not doubled; a specific indefinite topic can be doubled.
How It Works
1. An object that comes first. When a known object comes before the verb, speakers repeat it with a short pronoun:
- Книгата я прочетох. (I read the book.)
- Иван го видях вчера. (I saw Ivan yesterday.)
- Писмата ги изпратих. (I sent the letters.)
In speech this is practically required. Careful writing sometimes leaves the pronoun out, which sounds bookish.
2. Indirect objects. A на-phrase is doubled by a dative short form: На Мария ѝ казах (I told Maria), На децата им купихме подаръци (We bought the children presents).
3. Who did what. Nouns have no case endings, so the pronoun can show which noun is the object: Котката я ухапа кучето means The dog bit the cat, while Котката ухапа кучето means The cat bit the dog.
4. Required with some expressions. Patterns built on a short pronoun always keep it when a noun names the person: Иван го боли главата (Ivan has a headache), На Иван му е студено (Ivan is cold), Мария я няма (Maria isn't here).
5. When not to double. In a neutral sentence, a nonspecific new object is normally not doubled: Прочетох една книга (I read a book). A specific indefinite topic placed before the verb may be doubled. When the object follows the verb in a neutral sentence, doubling is optional and colloquial: Видях го Иван (I saw Ivan). Formal writing avoids that.
6. Emphatic pronouns. A full pronoun is doubled too: Мене ме боли (see мене ме). Doubling goes hand in hand with topic and focus word order.
Examples (6)
- Книгата я прочетох за два дни.
I read the book in two days.
Word by Word: The book it I-read in two days.
Книгата comes first, so я repeats it.
- На Мария ѝ казах истината.
I told Maria the truth.
- Тези хора ги познавам от училище.
I know these people from school.
- Кафето го пия без захар.
I drink my coffee without sugar.
- Котката я ухапа кучето.
The dog bit the cat.
Я marks котката as the object, so кучето is the subject.
- Иван го няма днес.
Ivan isn't here today.
With няма, the person is always repeated.
Common Mistakes
Doubling a new, indefinite object.
Прочетох я една книга.Прочетох една книга.In this neutral reading, една книга is nonspecific new information, so it is not repeated by a pronoun; indefinite morphology alone does not forbid doubling.
Leaving out the pronoun when the object comes first.
Котката ухапа кучето.Котката я ухапа кучето.The intended meaning is 'The dog bit the cat'. Without я, the first noun reads as the subject, so the sentence says the cat bit the dog.
Dropping the pronoun from a fixed pattern.
На Иван се спи.На Иван му се спи.Patterns like ми се спи always keep the short pronoun, even when a noun names the person.
