Add си to show that someone is calmly doing their own thing: Седя си вкъщи. (I'm just sitting at home.)

How It Works

1. What it adds. Compare:

  • Седя вкъщи. (I'm sitting at home.) — a plain fact.
  • Седя си вкъщи. (I'm just sitting at home.) — the speaker is at ease and undisturbed.

English often renders it with "just", "quietly" or "minding my own business".

2. Typical verbs. It goes best with imperfective verbs of states and everyday activities: седя, стоя, живея, спя, вървя, пея, чета. Вървя си по улицата и изведнъж ... (I'm just walking along the street when suddenly ...) is a classic way to start a story.

3. "That's just how it is." With съм, the same си presents a quality as natural or unchangeable: Той си е такъв. (That's just how he is.)

4. Placement. This си is a short form, so it follows the rules in placement of short pronouns: it never starts a sentence, it comes right after the verb when the verb is first, and right before the verb when another word comes first: Детето си спи. (The child is sleeping peacefully.)

5. How it differs from other uses of си.

  • With reflexive verbs with си, it is part of the verb itself: почивам си (rest), спомням си (remember).
  • Possessive си follows a noun and means "one's own": Взе чантата си. (She took her bag.)
  • The ethical dative uses other short forms, such as ми, to involve the speaker.

6. Register. This си belongs to friendly, relaxed speech and to fiction. Leave it out of formal writing.

    He lives quietly in the village, minding his own business.

  3. Детето си спи в стаята.

    The child is sleeping peacefully in the room.

    The subject comes first, so си goes right before the verb.

  4. Вървя си по улицата и изведнъж някой ме вика.

    I'm just walking along the street when suddenly someone calls me.

  5. Тананика си някаква песен.

    She's humming a song to herself.

  6. Той си е такъв, не му се сърди.

    That's just how he is, don't be angry with him.

    With съм, си presents a trait as natural and unchangeable.

Common Mistakes

  • Starting the sentence with си.

    Си седя вкъщи.
    Седя си вкъщи.

    Си is a short form and cannot open a sentence. When the verb comes first, put си right after it.

  • Putting си after an adverb instead of next to the verb.

    Живее спокойно си на село.
    Живее си спокойно на село.

    Short forms attach to the verb. Put си directly after живее, before other words such as спокойно.
