A short dative pronoun can show feeling instead of a recipient: Да ми се пазиш! (Take good care of yourself — for my sake!)

How It Works

1. Ми: the speaker cares. Common in wishes, warnings and commands to people close to you: Да ми се пазиш! Не ми закъснявай утре! (Don't you be late tomorrow!) Ти ми се дръж прилично! (You behave yourself, do you hear me?) It can also show tenderness or pride: Хубавец ми е той! (What a handsome boy he is!)

2. Ти: drawing in the listener. It makes the listener a witness or voices dismissal: Каква ти почивка! Не ми дадоха отпуск. (A vacation, you say! They didn't give me any leave.) Ми ти together adds emphasis: Такива ми ти работи! (That's just how things are!)

3. Си: it really is so. Си stresses that a quality truly belongs to someone and adds a friendly tone: Майстор си е той! (He really is a skilled craftsman!) Аз съм си такава. (That's just how I am.) Compare си за спокойно действие.

4. Only the short forms. The ethical dative uses only short dative pronouns. A full form like на мене always refers to a real participant in the sentence, so it cannot carry this meaning.

5. Placement. The pronoun follows the ordinary rules in място на кратките местоимения and ред на кратките форми: the dative comes before се (да ми се пазиш) and before a third-person е (хубавец ми е).

6. Reading it. If you cannot answer "to whom?" with a real person, the pronoun is probably an ethical dative. Translate it with tone, not with words like to me.

    In каква ти, ти is ethical; in не ми дадоха, ми is a real recipient.

    He really is a skilled craftsman!

    Си stresses that the quality truly belongs to him.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a full pronoun for the emotional meaning.

    Да се пазиш на мене!
    Да ми се пазиш!

    Only short forms can be ethical datives. На мене always points to a real participant, so the sentence no longer sounds like a caring command.

  • Putting ми after се.

    Да се ми пазиш!
    Да ми се пазиш!

    In a cluster of short forms, the dative pronoun comes before the accusative, including се.
