вместо да + Verb
Instead of Doing Something
Вместо да + a verb means "instead of doing": Вместо да учи, гледа телевизия. (Instead of studying, he watches TV.)
How It Works
1. The pattern. вместо да + present-tense verb. The verb takes the person of its subject:
- Вместо да учи, той гледа телевизия. (Instead of studying, he watches TV.)
- Ела с нас, вместо да седиш вкъщи. (Come with us instead of sitting at home.)
- Вместо да се оплакваме, нека намерим решение. (Instead of complaining, let's find a solution.)
The present form is used even when the story is in the past: Вместо да ми се обади, тя ми изпрати съобщение. (Instead of calling me, she sent me a message.)
2. Aspect. Use an imperfective verb for an activity (вместо да учи) and a perfective one for a single complete act (вместо да ми се обади). See perfective verbs after да.
3. With a noun. Without a verb, вместо works like a preposition: Пих чай вместо кафе. (I drank tea instead of coffee.) Ще отида вместо теб. (I'll go instead of you.)
4. Commas. Separate the вместо да clause from the main clause with a comma, as with без да and преди да. See commas before subordinate clauses.

- Вместо да ми се обади, тя ми изпрати съобщение.

A perfective verb for one complete act.
- Защо не си починеш, вместо да работиш до късно?

Before a noun, вместо is used without да.
Common Mistakes

Giving the verb the wrong person.
Ела с нас, вместо да седя вкъщи.Ела с нас, вместо да седиш вкъщи.With the intended meaning "Come with us instead of sitting at home", the verb after вместо да must match ти, the person who would stay home, so the form is седиш. Седя would mean that I am the one sitting at home.
Adding да before a noun.
Пих чай вместо да кафе.Пих чай вместо кафе.Да always introduces a verb. With a noun, use вместо on its own.
