Bulgarian says you are at an age: На колко години си? (How old are you?) На двайсет години съм. (I am twenty.)

How It Works

1. Asking.

  • На колко години си? (How old are you? — familiar)
  • На колко години сте? (How old are you? — polite or plural)
  • На колко години е баща ти? (How old is your father?)

You may also hear Колко си годишен? (to a man or boy) or Колко си годишна? (to a woman or girl).

2. Answering. На двайсет и пет години съм. or Аз съм на двайсет и пет години. In casual speech you can drop години: На трийсет съм. Because съм cannot start a sentence, do not begin with Съм на….

3. One year and months. Бебето е на една година. (The baby is one.) Тя е на осем месеца. (She is eight months old.)

4. Numbers. Both двайсет and двадесет are correct; the shorter forms are more common in speech (see numbers above ten).

5. Past and future. Change only the form of съм: Когато бях на десет години, живеех в Бургас. (When I was ten, I lived in Burgas.) Догодина ще бъда на трийсет. (Next year I will be thirty.) See the past of съм and the future of съм.

  2. На двайсет години съм.

    I am twenty.

    Съм comes at the end because it cannot start the sentence.

  3. Детето е на пет години.

    The child is five.

  4. Баба ми е на осемдесет и две години.

    My grandmother is eighty-two.

  5. Бебето е на шест месеца.

    The baby is six months old.

    For babies, age is often given in months.

  6. Когато бях на десет години, живеех в Бургас.

    When I was ten, I lived in Burgas.

    For past ages, use бях.

Common Mistakes

  • Using имам for age.

    Имам двайсет години.
    На двайсет години съм.

    Bulgarian does not "have" years. Use съм with на: на двайсет години съм.

  • Leaving out на.

    Аз съм двайсет години.
    Аз съм на двайсет години.

    Age always needs на before the number.
