Than: Od and Nego

Level 4

Comparative + od + genitive, or comparative + nego + same case.

How It Works

With odWith nego
Amir je viši od oca.Amir je viši nego otac.
Burek je skuplji od pite.Burek je skuplji nego pita.
Trči brže od mene.Trči brže nego ja.

After od the noun or pronoun is genitive. After nego the second item matches the case of the first: Volim ljeto više nego zimu (both accusative), Hladnije je u Tuzli nego u Mostaru (both locative).

Nego is the right choice before a whole clause: Bolje je nego što sam mislio.

Both are standard. Od is shorter, and nego is flexible.

Nego is followed by the same case, the nominative.

    Both nouns are accusative.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the noun after od in the nominative.

    Amir je viši od otac.
    Amir je viši od oca.

    Od needs the genitive.

  • Using a different case after nego.

    Volim ljeto više nego zima.
    Volim ljeto više nego zimu.

Nego usually repeats the case of the first thing.
