više / manje

More and Less

Level 2

Više is more and manje is less. Put the noun after them in the genitive.

How It Works

Više and manje work like words of quantity, so what follows is in the genitive.

  • Hoću više kafe. I want more coffee.
  • Imam manje vremena. I have less time.
  • Emina ima više knjiga. Emina has more books.

For a mass noun (coffee, time, bread) the genitive is singular. For a plural, count noun (books, friends) the genitive is plural.

Više has a second job in negative sentences: Ne radim više. means I do not work any more. The verb is negative, and više adds "any more".

On their own, without a noun, they are the adverbs for more and less: Volim ga više. (I like it more.)

For comparing two things with an adjective, you will use od or nego at Level 4.
