Subject Pronouns

Level 1

The pronouns are ja, ti, on, ona, ono, mi, vi, oni, one, ona. Use them for emphasis, not for every sentence.

How It Works

Here are the subject pronouns.

PersonSingularPlural
1stja (I)mi (we)
2ndti (you)vi (you)
3rdon, ona, ono (he, she, it)oni, one, ona (they)

The plural has three forms because it shows gender. Oni is for men, or for a mixed group. One is for women only. Ona is for neuter nouns such as sela (villages).

Because radim, radiš, radi already tell you the person, a Bosnian speaker usually says only Radim u Tuzli. With biti, the pronoun is also often dropped: Umorna sam. Use on, ona and ono to match the noun you mean, so a table is on, a house is ona and a village is ono.

Examples (4)

  1. Radim u Tuzli.

    I work in Tuzla.

The ending -im already shows ja, so the pronoun is left out.

  2. Ja pijem čaj, a ti piješ kafu.

I drink tea, and you drink coffee.

The pronouns stress who does what.

  3. Ona dolazi iz Mostara.

    She comes from Mostar.

    Ona points to one woman.

  4. Mi idemo, a vi ostajete.

We are going, and you are staying.

Mi and vi set the two groups apart.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a male pronoun for a woman.

Emina je moja sestra. On živi u Zenici.
Emina je moja sestra. Ona živi u Zenici.

On is for a man or a masculine noun, ona for a woman or a feminine noun.
