u, na + Locative
In and on
U = in, na = on or at, and both use the locative to say where.
How It Works
Both words answer "where?" with the locative. Remember that the same two words with the accusative answer "where to?" instead.
| Word | Used for | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| u | inside, towns, countries, buildings | u gradu, u školi, u Bosni |
| na | surfaces, open places, events | na stolu, na pijaci, na koncertu |
Work and study often use na: na poslu (at work), na fakultetu (at university). School uses u: u školi. Mountains and islands usually use na: na Jahorini.
The choice is mostly fixed by habit, so treat each place as a small phrase. When unsure, check the example in the dictionary.
