Asking Where Something Is
Gdje je asks where something is.
How It Works
The question word gdje means where. Put je after it for one thing and su after it for more than one.
- Gdje je pošta? Where is the post office?
- Gdje je Lejla? Where is Lejla?
- Gdje su ključevi? Where are the keys?
The thing you ask about is the subject, so it stays in the nominative, the dictionary form.
You can answer with the same pattern: Pošta je tamo. or Ključevi su na stolu. The word tu means here or right there, and tamo means over there.
Note: gdje is the ijekavian form. Other places write gde, which you do not use in Bosnian. In everyday speech, gdje is often used when asking about a direction too (Gdje ideš?). The entry on gdje, kamo, odakle covers that.
