Asking the Way

Level 2

Ask Gdje je...? or Kako da dođem do...? and put the place after do in the genitive.

How It Works

Two questions get you almost anywhere.

  • Gdje je autobuska stanica? Where is the bus station?
  • Kako da dođem do Baščaršije? How do I get to Baščaršija?

The place after do is in the genitive case.

NominativeAfter do
poštado pošte
stanicado stanice
mostdo mosta
Vijećnicado Vijećnice

Neuter nouns in -o also add -a: selo becomes do sela.

Useful answers: Idite pravo, Skrenite lijevo, Nije daleko. Start your question with Izvinite to be polite.

If the answer is too fast, use a phrase from the earlier entry: Možete li ponoviti? A map on your phone also helps, and people like to point.

Examples (4)

  1. Izvinite, gdje je pošta?

Excuse me, where is the post office?

Gdje je asks for a place.

  2. Kako da dođem do Baščaršije?

How do I get to Baščaršija?

    Do needs the genitive: Baščaršije.

  3. Kako da dođem do stanice?

How do I get to the station?

    Stanica becomes stanice.

  4. Idite pravo do mosta.

    Go straight to the bridge.

    Most becomes mosta.

Common Mistakes

  • Learners leave the place in the nominative after do.

    Kako da dođem do pošta?
    Kako da dođem do pošte?

Do is followed by the genitive: pošte.
